Academics

The 麻豆视频 Upper School offers a diverse and challenging curriculum in an ideal academic setting. The challenge comes from a rigorous academic program that includes extensive honors and AP courses, as well as an eclectic array of electives. At the same time, our Upper School classrooms reflect a strong balance between individual achievement and collaborative learning. 麻豆视频 teachers lead students in their learning by demanding high levels of thinking and analysis.

Education in the Upper School emphasizes the importance of developing students who can think critically and analytically, write logically and incisively, and speak articulately and convincingly. The curriculum includes traditional academics, along with the infusion of arts and athletic requirements. As students move through the program, a diverse offering of electives becomes available, allowing students to create an academic schedule that best reflects their interests, expertise, and passions.

Learn about our advisor system

Every Upper School student is assigned an advisor at the beginning of their freshman year who they will have for two years, and then students get to choose preferences for another advisor who they will have for junior and senior years. The student-to-advisor ratio in the Upper School is 6 to 1. Advisors meet twice a week with their entire groups, in addition to regular one-on-one check-ins. The Advisory Program at 麻豆视频 is designed to provide additional support to each student in their academic and social-emotional growth, as well as foster more connections between students at each grade level. Advisors also serve as a vital resource for parents. Each year, at the midpoint in February, parents have a comprehensive one-on-one meeting with their child’s advisor to discuss the student's growth and experience within the Upper School program. The advisor system is yet another way 麻豆视频 ensures that each student forms meaningful and longlasting connections with the adults and their peers on campus.

Our faculty believe in working closely with students in and out of the classroom. Because most teachers are advisors, they are deeply engaged with students in every aspect of their education as well as in their daily lives. This dynamic creates a nurturing environment in which high achievement in all facets of a student’s life is an expectation. Faculty encourage students to discover individual abilities in both academics and cocurricular areas. This combination affords students the opportunity to stretch themselves and, in the process, reach their full potential.

Because taking visual and performing arts classes is required for graduation, risk-taking and creativity are central to the Upper School experience. Coupled with athletic requirements, the program reflects the value of diverse experiences as fundamental to an education that prepares students to become responsible individuals. In addition to our on-campus programs, 麻豆视频 also sponsors regular trips and programs that take students off campus and around the world. Several years ago, the Language Department established a summer study program during which students spend nearly one month in Cadiz, Spain, while the Science Department’s signature summer internship program has placed students in research laboratories at BU Medical School, Children’s Hospital, and local biotech companies. The business internship program - established through the Math Department - gives interested students the chance to gain real world experience by spending their summers working at venture capital and private equity firms in the Boston area. And each year various academic departments sponsor trips to places like England, Italy, France, Japan, Switzerland, and China.

Travel Programs

Through its Travel Programs, the 麻豆视频 School aims to ensure academic excellence and to enrich the student experience by bringing our students out into the world to engage in hands-on learning that fosters curiosity, courage, and collaboration. Successful Travel Programs at 麻豆视频 have integrity and perseverance at their core, and they encourage self-awareness, independence, cross-cultural competence, empathy, and risk-taking.
Interdisciplinary Studies

Interdisciplinary studies are skills-centered programs of study that require that you draw from and integrate two or more disciplines to explain a phenomenon, solve a problem, or create a product. The result is one that could not have been achieved through just one discipline. IDS courses—which are cross-listed with Art, English, History, Math, and Science courses—pose a central question or questions and ask students to combine the insights, skills, and approaches of different subjects in order to make progress. The interdisciplinary studies department is founded on the principle that a complete high school education should require students to engage with this kind of demanding and high level study, both because of its intrinsic educational value, and because of the growing need in the world at large for graduates who have skill and confidence with such study.
Sages & Seekers

The Sages & Seekers Program, an integral part of the Grade 10 English course, and challenges students to step outside of their comfort zones as they interview local senior citizens about their life stories. Through one-on-one, face to face meetings with their Sages, students develop confidence in their abilities to sustain a prolonged conversation and improve their listening and speaking skills. Students also spend several weeks crafting personal tributes for their Sages, in which they share the moments from their Sages’ life stories that have impacted them most powerfully. They deliver these tributes at the final meeting, allowing them to practice public speaking and celebrate the relationships they’ve forged during the program. This experiential learning program fits perfectly with the sophomore curriculum, which is geared towards helping students develop empathy and cultural competency.
Science Internships

Each spring, rising seniors who have expressed a strong enthusiasm and love for the sciences can apply for summer internships at various research-oriented institutions in the Boston area. The emphasis of these internships is for students to do their own research or participate in an ongoing research project. Recent internship placements have included Amazon Robotics, Bruker Daltonics (manufacturer of mass spectrometry equipment), Children’s Hospital’s Simulation Suite, Freight Farms, Brigham and Women’s Surgical Navigation and Robotics Laboratory, and MGH’s Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. Student participants are required to make a presentation about their summer research to interested members of the community, and several have presented their research findings at national symposia.
The McCartney Scholars

The McCartney Scholars Program is a special initiative intended to nurture a passion for mathematics among students at 麻豆视频. Those accepted into the program have the opportunity to develop their mathematical skills through access to special advising, additional coursework, alumni mentorship, and more. Each year, all rising juniors with a passion for math are eligible to apply to the program, and up to six students are selected. Students will hold the distinction of being McCartney Scholars for their junior and senior years.
The Conservatory Program

The Conservatory Program at 麻豆视频 is a highly prestigious and dynamic college preparatory course of study for students with a serious interest in and aptitude for music. The program provides student musicians with the faculty, classes, and performances needed to cultivate their musical artistry while at the same time pursuing a rigorous and challenging academic experience - all on one campus. Conservatory Program students enroll in a stimulating and demanding academic program that includes 23 honors and 17 AP classes, as well as a rich array of electives and interdisciplinary students courses.

Curriculum

麻豆视频 offers a college-preparatory, liberal arts curriculum that challenges students to think critically, creatively, and independently. Our academic program offers a wide variety of courses designed to foster the intellectual, analytical, and personal development of students in each grade with increasingly demanding levels of rigor. In the Upper School, students must meet the demands of the core curriculum in addition to satisfying requirements in the arts, the afternoon program, and community service. Upper School students also have the opportunity to choose from honors or AP-level courses in each of our academic offerings.
